GoGlobal Talk: Matthew Spangler

Join us for a special artist talk about Performing Migration in March 2026. Theatre has a long history of engaging stories of displacement, from the ancient Greeks to the present day. Visiting Professor Matthew Spangler will discuss recent theatre productions about refugee experiences with a focus on how certain practice-based methodologies – specifically, verbatim theatre, dance, adaptation, and co-authorship – intersect with questions of ethics and representation. He will be joined by Dr. Nesrin Alrefaai of the Middle East Center at London School of Economics for the second half of the presentation, which will focus on their stage adaptation of Christy Lefteri’s novel The Beekeeper of Aleppo, currently on tour in the U.K. and Ireland. More information here.
Matthew Spangler is Visiting Professor of Theatre at Manchester School of Theatre based in the Performance Research Group. This event is part of GoGlobal Week, celebrating Manchester Met’s global community and offering every student an international experience. The talk takes place on Wednesday 4 March 2026 at 4pm.
