SUMMARY:Bunker Talk #170: Nicola Dale

SUMMARY:Bunker Talk #172: Daphna Baram
DESCRIPTION:Daphna Baram is a London-based stand-up comedian\, researcher and journalist whose work explores stand-up comedy across borders. Her PhD at Lancaster University (2025) focused on how immigrant comedians in the UK negotiate their identities to live audiences in the UK. \n\n\n\nShe has performed twelve solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and regularly appears at festivals and venues across the UK and in Europe. Her comedy engages with politics\, body politics\, immigration and otherness. She is the author of Disenchantment: The Guardian and Israel and has written extensively about the Middle East conflict. Her current book project\, Something to Declare\, examines stand-up comedy as a space where cultural authority is contested and redefined in real time. Working between stage and academia\, she uses both performance and analysis to explore how humour shapes – and unsettles – ideas of who gets to belong.

Since 2020\, over 170 talks have been hosted by Performance Researchers and colleagues from across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. All talks are recorded\, edited\, captioned and then archived to create an online catalogue\, capturing how artists\, makers and curators think about the world today. SUMMARY:Bunker Talk #174: Simon Moreton
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, Simon’s book WHERE? was published by Little Toller. A hybrid work of prose\, drawing\, painting\, photographs and collage\, it connects themes of belonging and grief associated with his father’s death in 2017 to the folklore\, customs and social histories associated with his childhood home on Titterstone Clee Hill in Shropshire.   \n\n\n\nSimon is now revisiting Titterstone Clee as a new father\, exploring how walking\, drawing and other creative practices can be used to triangulate historical representations of place with voices in the archive and our own personal stories about the landscapes in which we exist\, especially within the paradox of personal happiness in a time of multiple global crises. \n\n\n\nSimon is an artist and writer. He is the producer of numerous zines of prose\, poetry and pictures\, including his regular series of writing and pictures documenting his life\, Minor Leagues. He is the author of Now is the Time to Know Everything (2023) a book about the bewildering excitement of pregnancy and the heartbreak of miscarriage\, written in the form of a love letter to a person who never quite came to be. His experimental memoir WHERE? (Little Toller\, 2021) documents the unexpected links between landscape\, grief\, and childhood that appeared in the aftermath of his father’s death in 2017. Gardening Beneath a Falling Piano\, a pamphlet of poetry\, was published by Bored Wolves in 2024.  He is Associate Professor of Creative Economies at UWE Bristol. \n\n\n\nThis talk is presented in association with the Manchester Centre for Place Writing.

SUMMARY:Bunker Talk #175: Viv Gardner
DESCRIPTION:Viven Gardner is Emeritus Professor\, Drama and Film at the University of Manchester. Their current research centres on gender\, sexuality and representation in and through performance in the period 1890-1920\, developing original work on the New Woman and the Actresses’ Franchise League. Projects include: an edited edition of the autobiography of musical comedy and music hall performer and suffragette\, Kitty Marion (with Diana Atkinson); work on the theatrical and performative lives of the 5th Marquis of Anglesey and a study of the the intersection of radical and popular discourses on gender and sexuality in performance at the fin de siecle (provisionally called ‘Staging the New Sex’). This last project covers material on the New Woman and Musical Comedy Girl\, ‘posing’ as performance\, hypo- and hyper- masculinity and the court room as a gendered and contested site for performers. Viven is also working with contemporary dancers/performance artists\, Marc Rees (‘Gloria Days’ on the 5th Marquis of Anglesey) and Liz Aggiss (‘Marjorie Irvine’) on the development of dance works that renegotiate archival performance material for the contemporary stage.
