Images of Research competition nomination

Michael Pinchbeck’s image of Talking Trees has been shortlisted for the Images of Research competition!

Talking Trees / 树说/述说 is a living, immersive, bilingual archive that uses site-specific soundscapes and verbatim storytelling to explore migration, belonging, and intercultural dialogue through the metaphor of trees, creating a portable methodology for international collaboration across language, place, and time. A fictional narrative drawn from archival research and images explores the journey the trees might have taken from China to the UK, 100 years ago, how they might be talking to each other and what they might say. This fictional narrative frames interviews and forms an audio walk between trees for visitors to follow. Talking Trees / 树说/述说 seeks to connect migration, language and landscape using digital heritage and map audio walks onto sites across Manchester, Nottingham and Ningbo to create a network of practitioners, researchers and communities. We have installed the project at University of Nottingham (UK/China) and Rushcliffe Country Park (Nottinghamshire).

Entries for the Image of Research competition are judged on three criteria:

Communication of the research

Choice of image to convey the research impact

Engagement with this year’s theme, Transformations
