The Migration Conference

Michael Pinchbeck and the Talking Trees project team presented at The Migration Conference at University of Greenwich.
The Migration Conference is an annual academic conference that focuses on the multidisciplinary study of migration. It serves as a platform for researchers, scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and students from around the world to come together and discuss various aspects of migration, including its causes, consequences, policies, and impacts on societies.
The paper was delivered by Dr Lan Guo (University of Nottingham) entitled ‘Talking Trees / 树说/述说: Home, Paths, Roots & Metaphorical Growth of Trees for belonging’. The presentation focused on language, education and migration studies, and shared the work Dr Lan Guo has carried out with Mandarin learners at the University of Nottingham through the Talking Trees / 树说/述说 project.

The Talking Trees project is located within research on migration and chimes with previous projects delivered either separately or in partnership by Lan Guo and Michael Pinchbeck around notions of home, migration and belonging. It’s an immersive audio experience designed with Leicester-based sound artist, Chris Cousin. At each of the trees you are invited to listen to verbatim interviews with Chinese speakers on a range of relevant themes. The voices were provided by students and staff from a range of backgrounds and ages.
